Painting - Oil, Acrylic or Watercolor

Very often when people tun to the internet for phrases like lessons on
painting, acrylic painting lessons or learn to paint with oil, they are beginners and have not yet chosen a favorite paint medium. Its a good idea to play with a variety of styles of art to get an understanding of which materials and medium you prefer. Although oil is perhaps the oldest form of paint medium, newer styles, such as watercolor and acrylic have made it easier and faster to produce artwork. Many artists however still struggle with the question of choosing oil over watercolor or acrylic

.
There are pros and cons of using oil paint in your works.
Pros
  • Oil paintings seem to be the favorite and most respected mediums in the sought after arena. When people hear the terms watercolor, acrylic or oil painting, they automatically deem the oil painting as a better category.
  • Oils produce vibrant, soft, rich and beautiful colors.
  • The colors blend easily. They are easy to manipulate on the canvas and can be worked so there are no hard lines or edges.
  • Recent technology has introduced an oil paint that is water soluble or water mixable. This means that artists can still use oil paint but avoid using toxic solvents and thinners, replacing them with water!

Cons
  • When using traditional oil paints, your works can take weeks, months or even years before they are complete. This is because the oil that is used in the pigment dries very slowly. Artists apply consecutive layers and often wait for them to dry before continuing. This is most often the case when doing portrait work.
  • Solvents and paint thinners used for paint and brushes can be harmful to your health. Be absolutely sure to use proper precautions and ventilation if using traditional solvents and paint thinners.
  • Mediums such as linseed oil is mixed with paint pigment to produce a consistency of product the artist desires. Too much linseed and the finished piece could wrinkle, too little and the paint is too difficult to maneuver. Getting the correct proportions could be a problem for beginners.

How To Choose A Painting To Give As A Present

At Christmas, giving a great gift is very important to some people. A great gift is something which is useful, will mean something to the person you are giving it to, looks nice and shows that you have put real thought into it. A painting is an excellent present, as if you get the picture right you will achieve all of these points with your gift. Painting make a room look nice, require a lot of thought and is a very impressive gift. Here is some advice on choosing the right painting.

Genre
The first thing you need to think about is what type of painting you want to give. You need to think about what type of person you are giving it to and work out what they will appreciate. They may like modern are with all its minimalism and bold images. They could prefer classic impressionist art or maybe you think they would like something abstract. If they are a good friend then you probably know the answer to this already, but if you are not sure, going to their house and seeing what other pictures they have on their walls will help you immensely. If they have no pictures or you can't go to their house, think about what their interests are and what they wear and this should give you an idea of the sort of genre they will like.
Image

Next thing to do is to choose an actual image. You need to decide whether you are going to get them a classic image such as a print of a famous painting or an image of something they know like a landscape or a person or whether you think they would appreciate something more emotional and not of any discernible subject. You also need to choose what type of art supplies you would like it to be created from. This could be oil or acrylic paint for example.
Size

The final practical thing you need to consider is how big a painting should you get. If they have a large house with big walls then you can get something massive, but if they have more limited space you will need to get something more standard size or maybe something much smaller. One final thing to think about is how you are going to get it to them. If you need to go on the bus, this may stop you from taking a huge life size horse painting to your grandmother's flat.

Canvas art and wall art can be purchased online easily. There are many galleries of which can be chosen on-line to suit any space in a variety of interiors. The choices vary from scenic landscapes to flowers, places of interest and modern art. The advantage of choosing a photo print, however, is that you can choose your own personal photo and send it on-line via email. The photo will then be transformed into a wonderful canvas art print of your own. You can choose any size of and also colour, or black and white finishes can be chosen. You can be assured that your canvas art and wall art will be of the highest quality and give years of pleasure to the onlooker.

I have many of these wall art prints in my own home. I have large and small canvases around my home and which are situated in nearly every room. I have photos of beautiful flowers, landscapes taken on holiday and a variety of personal family portraits which look fantastic wherever they are placed. I like the black and white hue photos best of all as they bring class and style to the room and look good in both traditional and contemporary settings. I also enjoy looking at my wall art as a way to relax. I have chosen a number of these from the on-line gallery mostly of painted scenes of places which I have visited and explored. These bring colour to the theme of my rooms and focus your attention as soon as you enter a room. They complement the colour scheme within my rooms and look especially well when highlighted with wall lights overhead. Pictures and photos in frames and surrounds look very old-fashioned now and not in keeping with the new look and design preferred in my own home. Choosing canvas art from the gallery also allows me to look at the work of other artists and use my favourite ones. It ensures I keep up-to-date with the work of modern and traditional artists and helps me to decide my preferences in the world of art generally.

Canvas art and photo prints have transformed the way I decorate and design my rooms within my home. They could easily do the same for you whether you are choosing for your home, office space, hotel bedroom or place of work. Your ideas of decoration and design will be transformed for the better if you choose canvas art and photo prints on-line like I did. They will be admired and give pleasure to everyone, especially you. Give it a try!
